Good coffee bean storage matters all year round, but it becomes even more important once the weather heats up. Warmer temperatures, stronger sunlight and higher humidity can all work against your beans, and one of the most common mistakes we see is simply overfilling the hopper. A few small adjustments this summer can make a real difference to what ends up in the cup.

Don’t overfill your bean hopper
It’s tempting to fill the hopper to the top so you don’t have to top it up as often, especially during busy periods. In hot weather, though, this means beans can sit exposed to warm air and light for longer than they should before they’re ground and brewed. Filling the hopper with smaller amounts more regularly keeps beans fresher and reduces the time they spend exposed to conditions that speed up staling.

How light affects your coffee bean storage
Light, particularly direct sunlight, breaks down the oils in coffee beans and speeds up the loss of aroma and flavour. If your machine or hopper sits near a window or under strong lighting, beans can degrade faster than you’d expect. Keeping beans away from direct light, and choosing a hopper or storage container that limits exposure, helps protect that flavour for longer.
The impact of heat on bean quality
Heat accelerates the natural oxidation process in coffee beans, causing them to lose freshness more quickly. In summer, rooms and machines can run warmer than usual, particularly in busy offices, cafés or kitchens. Beans left in a hot environment for extended periods can taste flat or stale well before their best before date. Storing stock in a cool spot away from radiators, direct sun or equipment that generates heat helps beans stay at their best.

Why humidity is a hidden risk
Moisture in the air is another factor that’s easy to overlook. Coffee beans are porous and absorb humidity from their surroundings, which can affect grind consistency and lead to uneven extraction. This is especially relevant during humid summer spells. Airtight containers and a dry storage area go a long way toward keeping beans in the condition they should be.
Getting the most from your coffee bean storage this summer
Small habits make a big difference. Filling the hopper little and often, keeping beans out of direct light, choosing a cool storage spot and protecting stock from humidity will all help maintain consistency in every cup, no matter how warm it gets outside.
